Cast Your Cares (SATB)
composed 2022
(generated with Cantåmus software)
This is the first piece I sat down to compose at my computer, for about 4 hours, which prompted my husband asking “Is everything ok?” (Now, that’s a loaded question, isn’t it?) This piece came as a surprise to me. My only composition prior had been little musical doodles of silliness, theory class chord progressions, or counterpoint exercises. It had previously felt like a mathematical chore. Something changed in my brain. Possibly through my diagnosis with T1D and DKA in 2011 (when I had been tested for a stroke), or after two surgeries with general anesthesia in 2018. I don’t actually know, because I didn’t sit down to try to write until 2022. My sleep quality improved drastically between 2020 and 2022 with new insulin pump technology, and I gained hours of my time back from managing my disease. So, I tried, and this is what came out. And, it keeps coming. I actually fear that it could all disappear as suddenly as it came.
